We’re looking for a proactive, commercially-minded head of Financial Accounting and Reporting to own all of our accounting and regulatory work, and to help us build a world class finance function empowered by technology.
At Monzo we’re building the best bank account in the world. We’re growing fast, both in customer numbers and staff: since launching our prepaid card 18 months ago we’ve signed up more than 300,000 active users and grown to a team of over 120 people.
It’s an exciting, fast-paced environment to work in, and you’ll be supporting our mission to change how banking works. There are some fascinating challenges involved in this role: as we look to expand internationally and build out a marketplace, you’ll take responsibility for planning and implementing foundations for financial reporting. We use technology to automate what we can, and finance is no exception: we’re already working to optimise our process for making accurate regulatory returns, and you’ll build on this. We want you to help us design how financial accounting and reporting should look and work in the bank of the future.
You’ll be responsible for:
- Month-end accounting: leading and managing a tight process, ensuring controls are in place and that the balance sheet is properly reconciled (against our internal banking ledger, our share register, our bookkeepers’ prepayments and accruals reports)
- Annual financial statements: producing them, working with external auditors for sign-off, and helping present them to our community
- Reporting & interpreting: sharing monthly financial results with management, recommending actions to improve these, and producing relevant financial reports (including to investors)
- Regulatory returns: to the PRA, FCA and Bank of England, ensuring 100% compliance and optimal processes
- Tax: managing our R&D reclaim, corporation tax, VAT (which is interesting in a bank), share options and PSA computations and filings
- Reviewing policies, processes and procedures around our accounting to ensure that they are relevant and fit for purpose
- Managing the company's early warning indicators (EWI’s) and triggers.
You’ll be hands-on, able to multitask effortlessly, and you’ll contribute to ad-hoc projects both big and small, for example: planning out how we’ll handle new regulatory requirements like IFRS and MREL; reducing our time to close the financial period; producing our annual capital and liquidity adequacy plans; or simply making sure the right people have corporate credit cards with the right limits.
You’ll join the finance squad of our Company Operations team, reporting to our CFO, and working alongside our Treasurer and Financial Planning Analyst. While a lot of your work will be with external parties (like our bookkeepers and external auditors), you’ll also work with our Payments team and other engineers around the company to automate the production elements of this role, so that you can focus on the parts where your knowledge and skills provide the most value.
You should apply if:
- You’re a chartered financial accountant, and have previously worked either in audit or very closely with auditors.
- You have a great eye for detail and are numerically astute.
- You take great satisfaction from investigating issues and thorough reconciliation.
- You’re fascinated by the regulatory landscape around finance.
- You’re self-motivated and willing to turn your hand to any task.
- You embrace change and are excited to work in a dynamic environment.
Salary and stock options will be dependent on experience and expected scope of contribution, within a range of £60k - £80k.
